GET ON YOUR HANDS AND KNEES
Crawl around your house and explore the dangers from your child’s perspective.
THE LIVING ROOM
This is a place for families to meet and it’s
often an area with valuable items as well.
Look for any items on tables that could be
shaken or knocked over.
KITCHEN, BATH AND STAIRS
The average kitchen might seem relatively safe with its lack of small easy to reach items. However, since there are stoves, knives, and strong chemical cleaners in a kitchen, one should never leave a toddler unattended in a kitchen. Bathrooms and stairs are the other major danger areas. Get down on the floor with your child and check out your home from his view.
Children can be strangled by cords or injured when pulling a cord and an appliance falls on them. Furthermore, kids can choke on MINIBLIND cords. Use a cord shortner.
Put a safety gate one or both ends of the STAIRCASE, depending on where the child will be.
Keep all PLANTS out of reach. Many household plants are poisonous if eaten.
Put outlet plugs on unused OUTLETS.
Secure household CLEANERS in a locked box.
On the stove, keep the handles of pots and pans turned toward the wall away from the edge of a STOVE where a child could reach.
An excited child running from a playmate can mistake a SLIDING GLASS DOOR for an open doorway. Mark the window with decorative tape or stickers to distinguish it from a doorway.
Install childproof LATCHES on any cabinets and appliances within reach.
Lock all MEDICINE CABINETS, even if they seem out of reach. Or, put all medications in a locked tool box.
Secure bookcase using brackets screwed to the side or top of the BOOKCASE, and then screwed to the wall.
PARENT ACTIVITY:
Take the outlet covers from your Newborn Baby
Package and install them in your house. Buy
additional covers from the grocery or drug store.
